Hair Transplant + Scalp Micropigmentation
Combined Restoration
Hair Transplant + Scalp Micropigmentation
Some clients want growing hair and the look of fuller density. Working as a team with Hair Restoration Specialists of Atlanta, you can explore FUE hair transplantation with Hair Restoration Specialists of Atlanta and scalp micropigmentation (SMP) with us—both at our Sandy Springs address.
Used together, a transplant adds live follicles where the surgical team can place them; SMP adds the appearance of density between grafts, softens hairline edges, and can camouflage donor or strip scars after healing. A consultation is required for each part of the plan. Results vary; neither procedure guarantees a specific look.

Who this helps
Built Around Black Men and Black Women
Our studio’s long focus has been Black and Afro-textured hair—hairline artistry, traction patterns, women’s side thinning, and scar camouflage on darker skin tones. Working as a team with a surgical clinic lets us talk honestly about when grafts help, when pigment helps, and when both make sense.
- Men: rebuild a natural hairline and crown with grafts, then use SMP for the “shadow” of density that makes a short cut or fade look fuller
- Women: add grafts where donor allows along sides, temples, or part lines, then use SMP to reduce scalp show-through between strands—especially on women’s sides
- Traction alopecia: grafts may restore growth in some areas; SMP can fill regions that are not good graft sites or that remain thin after surgery
- Scarring & keloid consideration: discuss scarring risk with HRS Atlanta before surgery; after healing, our medical SMP for transplant scars can reduce the visibility of donor marks or older FUT scars on many skin tones
How the pieces fit
What Each Procedure Does
Hair transplant (at HRS Atlanta)
Moves your own follicular units from a donor zone into areas of thinning or loss. HRS Atlanta describes FUE and no-shave / partial-shave FUE options on their FUE page. Growth is gradual over months. Graft count is limited by what can safely be taken from the donor area.
SMP (with us)
Places tiny pigment deposits in the scalp to mimic hair follicles or add the look of density. It does not create growing hair. It is often used:
- Between grafts to reduce scalp shine and the “see-through” look
- Along the hairline for a softer, finished edge
- Over healed donor punch marks or linear strip scars
- On women’s sides and part lines when surgery alone cannot fill every gap

Information from HRS Atlanta
The Transplant Side of a Combined Plan
According to HRS Atlanta, the practice has over 45 years of experience in hair restoration and serves men and women of all ethnicities, including African American patients. HRS says it offers free consultations, either virtual or in-office, and financing options including CareCredit.
Diamond Plus™ No-Shave FUE
According to HRS Atlanta, its Diamond Plus™ No-Shave FUE method lets patients have an FUE transplant without shaving the donor or recipient areas. Only the follicles being moved are trimmed, so the surrounding hair stays at its usual length. HRS presents this as a discreet option for people who want to keep their style, including professionals in public-facing roles. HRS says there is no linear scar with FUE and that many patients return to work the next day. It also says new growth typically starts around 90 days and continues gradually over the following year. Read HRS Atlanta’s No-Shave FUE page.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma)
According to HRS Atlanta, PRP is a non-surgical treatment. A small blood sample is drawn and spun in a centrifuge, and the concentrated plasma is injected into thinning areas of the scalp. HRS describes it as best suited to mild-to-moderate thinning where follicles are still active. It notes that PRP is not FDA-cleared specifically for hair loss and is used off-label under physician supervision. HRS says sessions usually take under an hour, often start as a series spaced about a month apart with periodic maintenance afterwards, and can be combined with laser therapy, medication or a transplant. Common side effects HRS lists are temporary tenderness, redness, swelling or bruising. Read HRS Atlanta’s PRP page.
Options for women
According to HRS Atlanta, female pattern hair loss usually shows up as diffuse thinning along the part and top of the scalp rather than a receding hairline. HRS links it to factors such as hormones (pregnancy, menopause, thyroid conditions, PCOS), genetics, nutrition and stress. HRS says a thorough evaluation, which may include scalp examination, trichoscopy and blood work, comes first, and that not every woman with thinning is a good transplant candidate. For suitable candidates it offers FUE or FUT under local anesthesia, plus non-surgical options such as PRP. Read HRS Atlanta’s women’s hair loss page.

Timing
Typical Sequence (Individual Plans Vary)
- Shared planning conversation — For transplant or transplant + SMP, call HRS Atlanta at (404) 231-3100. For SMP-only questions, call us at (404) 229-7372. Tell either office you are interested in a combined team plan.
- Surgical consultation — HRS Atlanta evaluates donor hair, medical history, and goals. They decide if you are a candidate and quote surgical fees.
- SMP consultation — We review hairline design, skin tone, hair length goals, scar plans, and how pigment would support the transplant. Email a photo if you prefer a first look: [email protected].
- Surgery and healing — Transplant day and early recovery happen under HRS Atlanta’s care. We generally wait until the scalp is fully healed and growth has started before dense SMP in recipient zones. Scar-camouflage timing depends on scar maturity.
- SMP sessions — Usually more than one session for layered density. Exact timing is set after we see how your transplant settles.
Some clients do SMP first (for example, for an immediate density look or scar coverage) and add a transplant later. Others reverse the order. The right sequence is personal.
Honest limits
What Combined Treatment Cannot Do
- It cannot create unlimited donor hair
- It cannot erase every scar on every skin type in one session
- It cannot stop future native-hair thinning without ongoing medical care
- It cannot guarantee identical results to photos you may have seen online
We will not invent graft counts, prices, or outcome percentages. Those come from your consultations.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SMP be done over a new transplant?
Not immediately. Pigment work in a fresh recipient area can interfere with healing and graft survival. We wait until the surgical team and our studio agree the scalp is ready—often after early growth has begun. Timing is individualized.
Will SMP look natural with coily hair?
Matching pigment tone, dot size, and hairline softness to Afro-textured hair is a core part of our work. Combined with grafts that grow out curly, the goal is a cohesive look at your preferred length—not a mismatched “painted” scalp.
I already had a transplant years ago. Can I still combine treatments?
Often yes. Many clients come to us years after FUE or FUT for scar camouflage and density fill. Bring photos and surgical history if you have them. We may also refer you back to HRS Atlanta if another graft session could help.
Who do I pay?
Surgical fees are billed by HRS Atlanta. SMP fees are billed by us. Ask each office about financing; we offer Cherry payment plans for eligible SMP treatments.
Where do I book first?
Either office can start the conversation. If your main goal is growing hair, begin with HRS Atlanta. If your main goal is density look, scar cover, or women’s sides, begin with us. Mention that you are interested in both so each office knows you may want both.
